What can Gracie Jiu-Jitsu do for You?
If you're reading this, chances are you're already involved in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. If you currently train, great! Feel free share this post with your friends and family members who haven't tried this sport. If you don't train, let's see if I can convince you to try a class.
"What can Gracie Jiu-Jitsu do for me?", you ask. Here's the rundown:
It can provide a cardio workout unlike any you've ever experienced.
Do you run ultra marathons? Swim competitively? Take part in HIIT classes several days a week? Those are all great, grueling activities that require dedication, stamina, and physical exertion. I can't say that Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is better than any of those things, but I promise you that it's different, to the degree that physically fit individuals may find themselves gassing out during a five-minute sparring session. Jiu-Jitsu is a different kind of cardio, and chances are it will give you an extra edge in your other sports. In other words, you'll likely increase your overall level of physical fitness by including Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in your routine.

It can improve your strength...mentally and physically.
While Gracie Jiu-Jitsu involves more leverage than strength, it's still a physically demanding activity. In a sport where you are literally moving and manipulating your opponent's body, you shouldn't be surprised if you start gaining muscle.
Then of course there's the mental aspect. Jiu-Jitsu is hard. Sure, there will be training days when you'll go home feeling confident and strong, but there will also be days when you're completely frustrated. This - along with learning to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations, fighting nervousness when competing, and training with people who are bigger and stronger than you - will help build mental toughness.
It will likely provide you with a second family.
Chances are your Gracie Jiu-Jitsu teammates will become more than just the people you train with. This sport tends to attract an awesome, diverse group of people with big personalities. At Relson Gracie Connecticut, we do more than just train; we laugh together, support each other, and forge friendships that extend beyond the mats. This can be attributed mostly to common interest, the trust required to spar with another person, and the tendency for this sport to filter out individuals with massive egos. If you decide to start training Jiu-Jitsu, be prepared to make new friends!
It provides a healthy outlet.
This is a big one for a lot of people. Stressed at work? At home? Few things are as effective as Jiu-Jitsu when it comes to dealing with a bad day in a healthy manner. While that stress may come back after you leave the academy, it's difficult to focus on anything but Jiu-Jitsu for the two hours that class is in session. If nothing else, you'll get some endorphins flowing, see your friends, and perhaps even turn your day around because of it.
It is practical.
Last, but not least, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is practical as a form of self-defense. By not relying on punches, kicks, and other techniques in which the bigger, stronger person has the advantage, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu gives its practitioners an edge in the realm of self-defense. It relies upon leverage instead of strength and focuses on bringing the fight to the ground, where Jiu-Jitsu practitioners are comfortable.
These are the top five reasons that come to mind whenever I'm asked why I chose Gracie Jiu-Jitsu as my martial art. In no particular order, I enjoy it as a workout for both the mind and body, a practical form of self-defense, a means to relieve stress, and a place to spend time with some of my favorite people.
